Always thought proofing baskets were a waste of money until I borrowed one from a friend in Chicago
After three tries making ciabatta that came out flat as a pancake, the basket gave me that perfect oven spring and open crumb I've been chasing for months - has anyone else found a cheap alternative that works just as well?

Oh that's exactly what I did for months - just a metal bowl and a floured tea towel, right? I will say though I got way better results after I started using a finer weave towel instead of that fuzzy terry cloth one that kept sticking to the dough. My ciabatta finally started looking like actual bread instead of a weird flat pancake once I switched to a smooth linen napkin I found at a thrift store for like 50 cents. Have you tried that trick yet?
