PSA: I found a chafed wire bundle because a guy in Wichita let me watch him do a walkaround
Last month I was at a hangar in Wichita picking up a King Air and an old A&P named Ray asked if I wanted to tag along on his preflight. He spent 20 minutes just running his hands along the wing root and engine harness looking for rub marks, and about 8 inches back from a clamp he found a bundle rubbed down to bare copper on two wires. I used to do my inspections fast with a flashlight from a foot away, but now I get hands on every harness in the bay before I sign anything off. Cost the owner a 2 hour repair instead of a possible in flight fire, and Ray didn't even want credit for it. Anyone else got a specific spot on a certain airframe where chafing always shows up first?
