Dealer warranty vs third party, which actually paid out for you?

I was at my buddy's shop last week and overheard two guys arguing about extended warranties. One said the dealer's plan saved him $2,800 on a transmission at 65k miles, the other claimed his third party company bailed on him after 3 calls about a cracked manifold. Made me wonder if these plans are a real safety net or just another monthly bill. I've seen folks pay $1,500 for coverage that fights every claim, and others get total peace of mind for under $800 a year. So which route actually came through when your car broke down, dealer or independent? And was the wait time and paperwork worth the discount?

...so after watching my cousin fight with his third party warranty for four months over a sensor, I just assume all of them are basically paying to gamble on whether the claims adjuster had a good lunch that day. Dealer plans cost more but they at least know where the door is when you show up with a repair order. Still wouldn't buy either unless the car's a ticking time bomb, honestly.
