A mechanic told me to skip the extended warranty, now I'm torn

My regular shop guy in Akron said these 3rd party plans are just profit for the dealer, but my neighbor just used one to cover a $2,800 transmission swap. I was about to sign for a 5 year, 60k mile deal at $1,900, but his criticism made me stop and check the fine print on exclusions. Has anyone else had a mechanic talk them out of a warranty, and did you end up regretting the choice later?
