Wasted $80 on a fake vintage turntable from an online auction

I won a bid for a vintage Pioneer turntable on an auction site last month for $80. When it arrived, the platter was made of cheap plastic and the tonearm had no weight adjustment at all. I opened it up and found a modern digital motor inside a 1970s style shell. Has anyone else gotten burned by these fake retro turntables that look old but have no analog parts?

A modern digital motor inside a vintage shell? That is just wrong on every level. People must be going through the trouble of making these fakes look old just to trick folks who want real analog sound. I hope you got your money back through the auction site or your credit card company.

I get why you're upset, but in my experience, not all digital motors sound worse than analog ones - some modern builds actually hold speed better and don't need belt replacements. Your mileage may vary, but I'd give it a listen before writing it off completely.
