Warning: I was cleaning my turntable needle wrong for 5 years
I spent years using one of those little brush kits with the carbon fiber fibers to clean my stylus before every record. Last week a friend came over and watched me do it, then told me I was pushing the brush from back to front, which can bend the cantilever over time. Has anyone else found out they were doing a simple maintenance step totally backward without realizing it?

Well, that's a good catch from your friend. I've been cleaning my stylus for years too and I never really thought about the direction I was pushing the brush. I always just went back and forth real quick without paying much attention to it. Now I'm wondering if I've been doing it wrong the whole time and maybe put some unnecessary wear on my cantilever. It's one of those little things that seems so obvious once someone points it out, but you just don't think about it when you're in the habit.

Right? It's weird how we all just do things on autopilot. Reminds me of the time I spent a whole year scrubbing my bathroom tiles in circles before realizing I should just go in straight lines (the grout looked way better after, go figure).

Oh man, that "going in circles" thing hit home. I once spent a whole month wiping down my kitchen counters clockwise before a friend casually mentioned counterclockwise works better and now I can't even look at my sponge without feeling betrayed.
