Update: I ran my records at 45 RPM for 8 months without noticing, and a Motorola box tipped me off
I picked up a used Technics at a flea market in Akron for $40 last summer and just spun everything at 45 since the knob felt stuck. Last week I pulled out a beat up copy of Rumours that came with a Motorola console box, and the tempo was so fast it sounded like the Chipmunks. Turns out the whole time it was 33, and my ears just got used to the wrong speed. Anyone else ever mess up a setting for months and only catch it when a random box in the pile tells you the truth?
How did you not notice all your records sounding like they were being played by a guy on too much coffee for eight months? The weird part to me is that your brain just rewired itself to think that was normal. Pitch memory is weird like that, you can listen to a song your whole life and still have no idea if it's the right speed unless you hear the real thing next to it. That Motorola box was basically the only honest friend in your apartment at that point.
