That old TV repair guy in Tulsa gave me a real earful about my cleaning routine
I was complaining about a cracked flyback transformer on my 1979 Zenith and he told me to stop wiping the CRT with Windex every week. Said the ammonia eats the anti-glare coating over time, and he pointed to a scratch on mine that he swear was from that habit. Has anyone else heard this or is he just stuck in his ways?

Did you ever look at the coating up close in the light? I used to think glass was glass and any cleaner was fine, figured those guys were just set in their old ways. Then I pulled a trashed set out of a dumpster and saw how the coating had gone all cloudy and patchy where someone had scrubbed it for years. Now I just use a dry microfiber or a tiny bit of distilled water, and the picture on my daily watcher still looks sharp. That old guy may be onto something.
