That crackle in my turntable turned out to be static, not a busted cartridge
Last month I was spinning some old jazz records in my living room in Portland and this loud pop kept showing up every few tracks. I was ready to drop $80 on a new stylus, figured my Ortofon was finally shot. Before I ordered anything I tried wiping the vinyl with a dryer sheet, just on a whim, and the crackle vanished. Turns out the dry winter air was building static charge right on the platter mat. I hit the mat with a tiny bit of water on a microfiber cloth and grounded my tonearm cable to the amp chassis, no more pops. Has anyone else had static issues that mimic a worn needle? I still wonder if I should get one of those anti-static guns for the really old pressings.

Did you actually confirm the crackle was gone with the dryer sheet before you swapped the mat? Because static and a dying stylus can sound almost identical on the first few plays, but a worn needle will still show up on the inner grooves or quiet passages. I had the same thing happen with a Miles Davis pressing, wiped it down, static went away, and then three days later the crackle came back worse. Turned out the stylus was genuinely done, the static was just hiding the real issue at first. I'm not saying you're wrong, but it's worth checking the same record after a few hours of play before you trust the fix.
