That $30 turntable weight from Amazon messed up my cartridge alignment
Picked up a cheap vibration dampener for my Technics SL-1200 last week and after three plays it shifted the tonearm balance enough to chew the inner groove on a rare Blue Note pressing. Learned the hard way that aftermarket add-ons can throw off the geometry. Anyone else have a simple mod cause a surprise problem?

Are people really out here thinking a $30 hunk of metal is gonna ruin their whole setup? Sounds like a placebo thing gone wrong. Maybe your cartridge just wasn't locked down tight enough in the first place.

Wait has anyone actually measured how much clamping force changes when you swap a cart? Because I bet that $30 block of aluminum flexes differently than the stock plastic one and you basically get a different torque reading every time you screw things back on. Same reason why torque wrenches matter for car stuff but nobody thinks about it for turntables. The real issue isn't the metal itself being "bad" it's that the aftermarket piece might not spread pressure evenly across the headshell contacts. I've seen people chase tracking issues for weeks only to realize their fancy weight actually introduced a tiny micro gap between the pins. Just something to think about next time someone swears their heavy headshell fixed everything.

Right, it's the same thing with bike parts where swapping a $20 bracket changes how everything feels but nobody measures it lol. People just assume a metal replacement is automatically better without accounting for how it actually mates with the rest of the system.
