Shoutout to the old timer who told me my turntable platter was too tight
Last month at a swap meet in Cleveland, some retired audio guy saw me struggling with my Dual 1219. He said I was over-tightening the platter screw and it was messing up the speed consistency. I ignored him for two weeks cause I thought I knew better, but finally loosened it a half turn. Now my records play at the right pitch every time. Anyone else get stubborn advice that turned out to be gold?

Man I feel this. I once spent three months chasing a weird hum in my setup, replaced every cable twice, and it turned out my tonearm lift was just slightly too high. Felt like a real dummy when the crusty guy at the record shop pointed it out in like five seconds.

That hum story hits close to home. Had a similar issue with a Pioneer SX-780 where I kept swapping out cables and even recapped the power supply. Turned out the ground wire from the turntable was touching a lamp cord under the shelf. Moved it an inch and the buzz disappeared. Old guys at the record shop have seen it all before, they just know what to look for. Whether it's a tight screw or a misplaced wire, sometimes you gotta eat crow to get your system right.
