My $15 garage sale cassette deck blew my $200 digital recorder out of the water for band practice
So my band practices in my buddy Dale's basement in Akron every Thursday, and we've been using this fancy $200 digital recorder he got off Amazon to tape our jam sessions. Last month I found a dusty old Nakamichi cassette deck at a garage sale for $15, plus a bag of 10 blank tapes for another $5. I brought it over as a joke, but we hooked it up to the same mic setup and hit record on both. The digital one picked up every little hum from the furnace and made everything sound thin, but the cassette deck had this warm thump that made our bass player sound like he was actually playing in the room. We listened back to both and everyone just stared at each other. Now we record every practice on tape and Dale's $200 thing sits in a drawer. Anyone else notice old tape machines handle drums and bass better than cheap digital stuff?
