Hot take: my uncle's belt grease advice ruined my turntable platter

My uncle collects vintage stereo gear and told me to use lithium grease on the spindle of my Thorens TD-160 to quiet the rumble. He swore it was the same stuff the repair shops used back in the 70s, so I followed his instructions exactly. Three weeks later the platter started dragging and the motor was straining bad, so I pulled it apart and found the grease had gummed up into a tar-like mess. Cleaned it all out with alcohol and switched to a light synthetic oil rated for clock movements, and now it spins smooth as ever. Has anyone else gotten burned by following older family advice on lubricants for belt drives?
