Guy at the flea market in Amarillo said my reel to reel "sounded too clean," and I have been thinking about it for 3 weeks
So I finally got my old Akai tape deck running after replacing the belt and demagging the heads, and I brought it to the flea market on 6th Ave to show a buddy who sells vinyl. This older guy wandering by leans over, listens for maybe 10 seconds, and goes "sounds too clean, you lost the warmth." I kind of laughed it off at the time because I spent $40 on that belt kit and felt pretty good about the fix. But then I got home and started listening closer, and now I cannot unhear it. He might have been talking about tape saturation or head wear or maybe he was just messing with me, but it got me wondering if chasing "perfect" sound on old gear is even the point. My whole reason for messing with this stuff is that it sounds like something, not that it sounds invisible. Now I am second guessing whether I should put the worn heads back in just to see. Any of you tape folks run into this, where a stranger's offhand comment makes you question your whole setup?
