Finally fixed the flutter in my VCR's picture by cleaning one thing nobody mentions
Spent 2 hours last Saturday in my garage chasing a wavy line on my old VCR, and it turned out the rubber pinch roller was glazed, not the heads everyone online blames. A $6 bottle of rubber cleaner and a cotton swab got the picture rock solid, so what else am I missing on this thing?
Ran into the same thing with a tape deck last year and the pinch roller was half the battle. The other thing that got me was the rubber idler tire inside, it had gone hard and shiny and the tape would slow down or eat itself on rewind. Cleaned it with the same stuff and it grabbed way better, though a tire that far gone might just need replacing. Also check the felt pad on the back tension arm while you have it open, mine was worn flat and that added its own wobble.
