A stranger at the flea market made me rethink my whole turntable setup

I was picking up a replacement idler wheel for my Dual 1219 and this old guy next to me started chatting. He saw my cart and said "you're overthinking the platter, just check the wow and flutter first." I'd been chasing a wobbly sound for 3 months, swapping belts and changing tracking force. Turns out my motor pulley had a slight wobble and a $12 aftermarket one fixed it in 20 minutes. Has anyone else had a simple part screw up their whole sound and they blamed the wrong thing?
