Steel skid plates saved my transfer case, I was a plastic believer
I ran a plastic skid for 2 years on my Tacoma, thought it was fine since I mostly do fire roads. Then last spring near Moab I hit a rock ledge that put a 4 inch gash right through it. Swapped to a 3/16 steel plate from a local fab shop for $280 and honestly the weight is worth it. The first scrape on steel sounded scary but it just deflected and kept going. Has anyone else had cheap plastic armor fail on them, or am I just unlucky?

Ha, yeah I was the same way. Ran plastic on my 4Runner for years and thought I was being smart about weight. Then one sharp rock on a trail I'd run a dozen times just shredded it. Steel's been a "set it and forget it" thing for me since.
