Spent $300 on a winch bumper and it didn't fit my frame holes

Found a used ARB bumper on Craigslist for my 2005 Tacoma. Looked fine in the photos, guy said it came off the same generation. Got home, lined it up, and none of the eight mounting holes matched my frame by at least half an inch. Tried drilling new holes but my bit snapped on the frame steel. Had to pay a shop $150 to weld on new brackets. Total loss was $450 and three weekends of my time. Anyone else run into frame differences between model years on a Taco build?

Three weekends over a bumper mount hole?

Yeah man, welcome to Toyota's "generation gap" crap with the Tacomas. I had the same headache with my 04 vs my buddy's 06. Those frame holes are different between the early 2000s and the later 05-07 models, especially around the bumper mounts. What worked for me was using a step bit instead of a regular drill bit for the frame steel, went through slow with cutting oil and it didn't snap. Also, those ARB bumpers are notorious for needing some shimming with washers because the frame horns aren't perfectly straight even on the same year. Sounds like you got shafted by that shop though, I would've just used some Grade 8 bolts and drilled the frame holes to match, that weld job was probably overkill.
