Serious question, did a $12 pipe insulator really kill my intake drone on the trail?
Last weekend I was out near Bend, Oregon, and the drone from my snorkel setup was so bad I had to yell just to talk to my buddy. I tried the usual stuff like foam tape and a deflector, but nothing helped. Then an old timer at the trailhead said he wrapped his intake tube with a $12 pipe insulator from the hardware store. I was skeptical, but I gave it a shot. I ran a 4 foot section of closed cell foam around the tube and zip tied it. The change was night and day. Now I can actually hear my engine and my ears don't ring after a 3 hour drive. Has anyone else tried cheap insulation tricks to cut intake noise, or is there a better way?
Man, is intake drone really that bad that you had to yell? Sounds like you're chasing a fix for something that just comes with the territory of a snorkel setup. A $12 pool noodle wrapped around your tube cutting that much noise seems like a stretch, but hey, if your ears stopped ringing I guess that's what matters.
