Ran into a old timer at Moab that changed how I look at my build

I was out at Moab last month airing down and this guy in his 80s walks up looking at my setup. He said something like "that fancy suspension is nice but can you fix it with a rock and a shoelace?" It hit different because he had a beat up old Toyota with manual hubs and no computers. Now I carry a spare u-joint and basic tools instead of just fancy recovery gear. Anyone else have a random run-in that made them rethink their whole rig?

That old timer's got a point, simpler rigs mean less to break in the middle of nowhere.

Rolled my eyes so hard at my own dumb self after reading this. I was out in my fully decked out jeep with the fancy lights and the winch and all that, and then my buddy's 1990 4Runner with a bent bumper and duct tape on the taillight just cruised past me on a rocky climb. Really puts the "need" for that $2,000 bumper into perspective when your biggest problem is remembering which drawer has the trail mix.
