Overheard a guy at the parts counter talking about frame cracks on his '98 Tacoma
He was saying his shop found a hairline crack near the steering box mount after he installed a heavy winch bumper. Apparently the older frames on those trucks just can't handle the extra weight from a big winch and 35s without reinforcement. He said it took 3 weekends to cut out the bad section and weld in a new plate kit from a company called Frame Notched. Makes me wonder how many of us are running heavy bumpers on trucks that are 20+ years old without checking the frame first. Anyone else actually inspected their frame lately or just sending it?

Pretty sure those frames had rust issues way before winch bumpers, the Tacoma frame recall was a whole thing. Adding 200 pounds to a rusty frame just speeds up what was already coming.

First gen Tacoma frames were basically made of paper mache from the factory lol.
