Just realized my buddy's advice about tire pressure in sand was dead wrong
My buddy Mike swore by dropping tires to 8 PSI for beach driving at Pismo. I did that last weekend, got stuck twice, and had to dig out for an hour each time. Turns out 15 PSI works way better on that soft dry sand - anyone else have a friend who gave bad 4x4 advice?

Your buddy Mike was actually on the right track, you just hit that dry sugar sand at the wrong pressure for your rig. 8 PSI works great if you're running proper beadlock wheels or at least a rim with a good safety bead. I've aired down to 6 PSI in Glamis and floated right over stuff that would've swallowed me at 15. The key is keeping your momentum up and not cranking the wheel hard, which usually pops a bead. Maybe Mike's advice was meant for a different vehicle weight or tire sidewall stiffness than what you've got?
