Guy at the trailhead told me my "recovery points" were just tow hooks...

Question why you'd even care unless you're actually planning on doing some SERIOUS off-roading where it actually matters. Most people never even use their recovery points for anything real, just sounds like gatekeeping to me.

Have you actually tried getting your truck out of a muddy ditch without proper recovery points? Because I have, and it sucks. Spent two hours digging and pushing while some guy with a winch just hooked up and pulled out in five minutes. Recovery points ain't just for show, they're for when you screw up and get stuck somewhere stupid. Even if you don't plan on serious off-roading, one wrong turn on a rainy trail can leave you stranded. So yeah, having solid recovery points is more about being prepared than gatekeeping. Don't learn the hard way like I did.

And like @amyh21 says, it's not just for show until you're the one wishing you had them.
