I was dead set against paying for spray foam insulation but my neighbor's electric bill convinced me otherwise

After watching him save $85 a month through last winter in his 200 sq ft build up in Flagstaff, I finally bit the bullet and had it done last Tuesday, anyone else have a hard time switching from traditional batts?

Hang on a second - I gotta push back on that $85 a month savings figure. That's pretty misleading for most people. Your neighbor's place is only 200 square feet, which is basically a tiny house or studio. Most of us are dealing with 1500-2500 square foot homes where the savings won't be anywhere near that dramatic. The spray foam does help, especially in a climate like Flagstaff where it's freezing half the year, but the return on investment takes way longer for a typical house. You're looking at maybe $30-50 a month tops for a normal sized home, and that's if your place is really leaky to begin with. Still a solid choice if you got the cash to front the initial cost (and hate drafts like I do), but don't expect to recoup your money in a season or two.

Fair point about square footage being the real variable here, @keithharris. That $30-50 range sounds a lot more realistic for anyone not living in what's basically a shed.
