Spent 4 hours trying to light a wet campfire until I tried the dandelion trick

Last weekend up near the Pemigewasset River, I couldn't get a fire going after a rainstorm. I wasted 4 hours piling on wet wood and using half a can of lighter fluid. Finally a guy camped nearby showed me to grab dry dandelion fluff and use it as tinder with a ferro rod. Lit on the first spark, no joke. Anyone else have a weird trick for wet conditions up here?

Four hours on a wet campfire? That sounds like a personal problem. I've had plenty of soggy mornings in the Whites and never needed a dandelion intervention. A decent folding saw to get at the dry wood under bark, plus a good ferro rod, and I'm warm in ten minutes tops. Maybe the trick is just knowing what wood actually burns when damp.

Maybe it's the humidity in the air that matters more than the wood itself.
