Overheard two old-timers talking about the sinkhole on Route 9 and it changed my mind about that whole story

I always figured that sinkhole in '98 was just from old drainage pipes failing. But last week at the diner I heard Frank and Doug talking about how it lined up with where the old abandoned mine shaft from the 1800s used to be. They said the county knew about it for years but never marked it on any maps because they didn't want land values to drop. I don't know if that's true but it makes a lot more sense than the storm drain excuse they gave us. Anyone else hear something different about that night?

Of course the county knew. They probably figured if they ignored the abandoned mine shaft long enough it would just fix itself, like a bad check engine light. Classic cover-up, but at least it gave Frank and Doug something to argue about besides the price of eggs.

You honestly think the county would go through all that trouble just to keep a few property values from dropping? A cover-up like that would take way more effort than just fixing the pipes would have cost. Sometimes a busted drain line really is just a busted drain line.
