TIL I was bricking my CRT monitors by using the wrong degaussing tool

Used a cheap bulk tape eraser on a Trinitron from 1997 and it scrambled the colors permanently. Now I just leave them on for 30 minutes after moving. Anyone else kill a tube by accident?

Cheap bulk tape eraser" is exactly the problem. Those things put out a crazy magnetic field that's way too strong for a CRT. Trinitrons especially have delicate shadow masks and the cheap tools can literally bend them. I messed up a Sony 20 inch back in 2005 using a bulk eraser I grabbed from a thrift store. The geometry was shot after that, no fixing it. You are better off just using the built in degauss or buying a proper service coil with a switch.

That cheap tool mindset gets people into trouble all the time across so many hobbies. People see a "degausser" or "cleaner" at a thrift store and assume it does the same job as the proper tool, ignoring the massive difference in power. It's like using a sledgehammer to hang a picture frame - technically both hit things, but you're gonna wreck your wall.

Blew up a VCR once trying to degauss a monitor with a cheap magnet from a toy store.
