Wind direction is honestly just as important as the distance. If you're in a spot where the breeze shifts during the evening, even moving it a couple feet can totally change how the smoke moves through your seating area. Pro tip: set up a small test fire in the proposed new spot while your old one is still going, just to see how the smoke carries. Saves you from having to re-dig the whole pit later.
