Just overheard a guy at the trailhead talking about a bear getting into his car
I was getting my gear sorted at the Pine Creek trailhead Saturday morning and this older dude was telling a ranger his car got trashed overnight. Said a bear popped his back window open just by leaning on it, smelled a granola bar wrapper under the seat. The ranger told him bears in that area have learned how to open doors that aren't fully locked. Has anyone else upped their car security at trailheads or am I being paranoid?

Did you check if your car has a setting that locks all doors with a button inside? I started bringing a small cooler and strapping it down in my trunk, no food smells at all in the cabin. Also bought one of those cheap window screens for the back hatch so bears can't see inside. The rangers at Pine Creek told me they've been trying to get people to use those lockable carabiners on their doors for extra security. Have you asked the ranger station about any recent bear activity maps they keep?

Yeah that "learned how to open doors" part gives me chills, my buddy had a bear get into his truck at that exact trailhead last fall.
