Wednesday at the Goodwill bins was a goldmine for vintage hand tools

I hit the Goodwill outlet in Columbus last week and found 3 old Stanley planes in one bin. Paid about $2.50 each by weight. One is a No. 4 from the 1920s with the original blade. The other two need some cleanup but are all there. Also found a set of 8 old Morse twist drill bits in a canvas roll from the 50s. Anyone else have luck at the bins or is it just me?

the vinegar and water soak trick works great on those rusty plane bodies, just make sure you dry them completely and hit them with some paste wax right after. for the drill bits, a little evapo-rust on the rusted ones will get them sharp again without damaging the old steel.

...and then I got home and realized that canvas roll had a 1950s Ace Hardware logo on it, so now I'm down a rabbit hole trying to date old store brands instead of fixing up the planes.
