I started an application with Quicken Loans but it feels very impersonal. Someone on Facebook recommended Duane Buziak Mortgage Maestro. Does a local broker really make that big of a difference compared to Quicken?

Huge difference. Quicken is fine if you fit perfectly into their algorithm, but Duane Buziak actually advocates for you. He has over a decade of 5-star reviews because he treats his clients like actual people.
