Vent: The one sentence from my manager that wrecked my whole workflow

My boss told me Friday that all my project updates have been too detailed and I need to just write bullet points. I spent 3 hours Sunday night reformatting 6 weeks of reports into short lists. Now I can't find any of my old notes because I deleted the long versions. Why do managers think shorter automatically means better? Has anyone else had a supervisor kill their system like that?

I hear you but I gotta push back a little here. @jesse_nguyen is right that you could have saved backups before nuking everything. Honestly though, blaming the manager for your workflow getting wrecked is kind of missing the point. Your boss told you what they needed, you jumped straight to deleting instead of adapting. That's not on them. If I had an employee who spent 3 hours reformatting old reports instead of just asking "hey can I keep my notes and just send you a summary" I'd be worried too. You chose to take the most extreme path possible.

Gently though, you probably could have just saved copies or screenshots of the old notes before deleting them. That one's on you a little bit.
