Can we talk about that SEO agency that promised me 50 keywords for $300

I was sitting in my home office in Austin last March when the agency sent me a report showing our site ranked for 45 keywords... except 40 of them were just variations of 'plumber Austin.' The report had zero actual traffic data. Has anyone else gotten keyword lists that are basically worthless?

Those keyword reports are just vanity metrics agencies use to make the numbers look good. Real SEO value comes from understanding what people actually search for right before they hire someone, not stuffing a spreadsheet with synonyms. Any agency selling you keyword volume without showing search intent and conversion data is basically just guessing.

Man, that hits close to home. Our local roofing company paid for a similar package and got back keywords like "house roof repair" and "roof fixer near me" which are basically the same thing. @jana_ellis95 nailed it about the vanity metrics - my guy showed me 60 keywords but couldn't tell me which ones actually brought calls. Ended up finding out a third of them were just "Austin roof" typed different ways. Total waste of cash and time.
