Gasped reading that... you must have felt that icy dread creeping up from your ankles as the water just kept spreading. I had a cousin who tried the same thing with a bathroom sink and ended up with a puddle so deep it floated his throw rugs across the room. Did you at least shut the main valve off quick or were you standing there with a mop hoping it would just stop on its own? That "learn as you go" approach really backfires when gravity and water pressure team up against you. Hope nothing valuable got soaked down there, those cardboard boxes always seem to find the damp spots.

Jesse, I've been there. I actually flooded my own laundry room two summers ago trying to swap out a busted hose. What finally worked for me was buying one of those simple shut-off key tools at the hardware store for like 8 bucks. I just shut the main valve off first thing before touching anything now, no more guessing games.
