PSA: I was pruning my apple trees all wrong for 5 years straight

I always cut branches flush against the trunk like I saw on some random YouTube video, but last weekend my neighbor who used to work at a nursery stopped by and told me I was leaving "stubs" that invite rot. She showed me how to cut just outside the collar instead, and now my 3 trees look way healthier. Anyone else get a reality check from a random passerby?

Ngl I was doing the same thing for years. Random old dude walking his dog set me straight last summer.

Hate when you think you've got it down and then someone casually drops the knowledge like that. Makes you wonder what else you've been messing up without realizing it. At least your trees are on the mend now though, that's the main thing.

But don't you think it's kind of hilarious how we all just stumble through life thinking we're pros at something? I spent two whole summers overwatering my hydrangeas cause someone told me they "loved water" and I took it way too literally. The leaves went all yellow and droopy and I was convinced it was some rare plant disease. Turns out I was just drowning the poor things.
