Appreciation post: my realtor pushed me to reconsider a house I walked away from

Three years ago I was looking at houses in Austin and this one place had awful yellow carpet and a weird smell in the basement. I told my realtor I was done with it but she made me come back the next week and actually look past the surface stuff. Turned out the structure was solid, the roof was only two years old, and the smell was just from a backed up drain. I bought it for $185k and now it appraises at $230k. Has anyone else had a realtor change your mind on a house you nearly skipped?

Read a similar story on Reddit where the realtor spotted good bones under ugly paint.

So you're telling me your realtor actually talked you into a house you hated at first? That's wild, I've heard stories like that but never seen it work out so well. My friend Sarah was looking in Denver last year and she almost walked away from this little ranch house because the kitchen was tiny and ugly with mustard yellow cabinets. Her realtor basically begged her to go back, turned out the whole place had been rewired and had new plumbing, the kitchen was just cosmetic. She bought it for $210k and now it's worth like $245k after she painted the cabinets white and put in some cheap new countertops.
