Honestly, how risky is it really to step off the path for a minute during a good chat? Most people hike on pretty basic trails, not the side of a cliff. You might just walk a few extra feet into some trees, not into a survival situation. It feels like common sense keeps you safe more than staying on a painted line (you know, unless you're way out in actual wilderness). Getting a little turned around just makes for a better story later.
