Vent: My last out-of-town job had me rethinking all the travel hype

Just got back from a six-week stint up north running a dozer on a pipeline project. Everyone talks about the big checks and adventure, but the isolation and time away from home hit me harder than I expected. Am I the only one who thinks the glamour of travel jobs is overrated?

Those lonely motels kill the hype... @barbara84 gets it.

Honestly, the hype is real until you're living out of a motel for weeks on end. What helped me was setting a strict schedule for calling home, even just ten minutes a day. Pack some stuff from home, like a photo or your own pillow, to make the room feel less empty. I also found that having a hobby you can do alone, like reading or podcasts, saves your sanity. And sometimes you gotta weigh if the money is worth missing birthdays and holidays... it's a tough call that only gets harder the longer you're out there.

Actually saw a reddit thread on this last month. People in oil fields talking about the burnout from being away so long. Kinda changes how you see those job ads...
