TIL a trick for fitting a tight scope base from a guy in a Wyoming truck stop

He said he puts the base in the freezer for 20 minutes and the receiver in the sun for 10, then they slip together easy. I tried it on a stubborn Ruger American and it worked first try. What other old-school fitting tricks are out there that actually work?

Honestly, that thermal trick makes me nervous. I'd worry about the different metals contracting and expanding at different rates, maybe causing stress or a shift later on. For a really tight fit, I've always had better luck with a fine honing stone and some oil, just taking my time to polish the inside of the base. Doesn't that seem safer than a temperature shock?

Yeah, @the_eric, that's exactly why I stick with the stone method too.

But the thermal trick is super fast, right @the_eric?
