I used to think email lists were just for big companies
A friend who runs a small bike shop in Austin told me my sign-up form was too long. He said, 'People just want to give an email and go, not their life story.' I cut my form from five fields down to just email and a first name. My sign-ups went up by 40% in a month. Has anyone else found that less info gets more people on your list?

Is it bad that my first sign-up form asked for a blood sample? Yeah, I learned the hard way too. My old form had so many boxes it looked like a tax return. Cutting it down felt like I was giving something away for free, but then people actually started using it. Turns out nobody wants to fill out a questionnaire just to get a coupon.

Remember my old form that asked for a zip code, birthday, and favorite color? I was basically running a census. It's amazing how many people will happily trade an email address for a discount, but the second you ask for anything else they vanish. Your friend in Austin nailed it. We overthink this stuff and make it a chore.
