I was using the wrong grid system for my posters for like a year
I was working on a concert poster for a local band in Austin and it just looked... off. My friend, who does UX design, looked at it and said, 'Your baseline grid is fighting your column grid.' I had NO idea they were supposed to align. I was just using a basic 12-column setup from a template and ignoring vertical rhythm completely. Has anyone else had a specific 'aha' moment about grids that fixed their layouts?

Man, I used to think the same way about grids. Then I tried lining up the baseline with my columns on a menu design and it just clicked. Everything suddenly looked way more solid and professional, even though it's just a subtle thing.

Honestly, grid systems are way overrated. I made flyers for my friend's band last summer with zero grid, just eyeballing it in Canva, and they looked great. People get too caught up in rules and perfect alignment. The best posters grab your eye with feeling, not math. That UX friend sounds like they're making things way too complicated for a simple concert ad. If it looks good to you and the client is happy, that's all that matters. Strict grids just kill the creative vibe.
