I found my third grade recorder in my mom's attic last year. The plastic mouthpiece still had my little teeth marks all over it. It brought back the whole memory of practicing that awful song for the spring concert. My mom just laughed and said she kept it because it was proof I tried.

Read an article once about how holding old stuff works better than photos for memories. Like that ribbon probably smells like gym floor glue and brings back the whole day. My buddy found his little league glove and said he could suddenly feel the pocket and hear his coach. Makes sense why your mom kept that gross recorder too.
