Had a trail do that to me last fall. aaron708 has a point with the glitch idea, but a good map usually explains it. Just double check your bearings before you assume a matrix error.

Used to roll my eyes at stuff like this. Saw a shadow move wrong on a hike last year and it got me. Believe some trails just have glitches now.
