Pro tip: The exact number of steps to my kitchen sink is wrong in my head
I've lived in this apartment in Cincinnati for seven years. Every single morning, I walk from my bedroom door to the kitchen sink to fill the kettle. For years, I was sure it was 15 steps. I even counted them out loud for my niece once. But last Tuesday, I decided to actually count them properly, heel to toe, and it was 17. Not 16, not 18, but a solid 17. I've done it every day since and it's always 17. My brain is so convinced it's 15 that I still feel a weird jolt of surprise on the 16th step. How can a daily routine I've done thousands of times have a wrong number stuck in my head? Has anyone else had a simple, physical fact about their own home just be wrong in their memory like this?

My old house in Dayton had the same thing with 13 stairs I swore were 12.

You're making a big deal out of two steps. Your brain probably just rounded the number down because it's close enough to get the job done. It's not like you were walking off a cliff. Our memories for boring daily stuff are pretty bad. Just accept it's 17 now and move on.

Right? It's like how you always think you know how many stairs are in your house until you actually count them.
