My car keys vanished from my kitchen counter in broad daylight

I was making coffee in my apartment in Austin, put my keys down on the counter, and turned around for maybe ten seconds. When I looked back, they were just gone. I tore the place apart, checked my pockets three times, nothing. An hour later, I found them sitting exactly where I first put them, in plain sight. Has anyone else had something disappear and reappear like that, with no good explanation?

My old apartment in San Antonio had a spot by the toaster that was a total black hole for things. I started putting a bright blue dish towel down first and then placing my wallet or keys on top of it. The color contrast somehow made my brain actually see the item later. Why does it always happen when you're in a hurry, right?

Oh that's so smart. I've got a similar spot by my coffee maker, @pathenderson. I started leaving a specific orange coaster there for my wedding ring, because otherwise it just vanishes into the countertop. It's like our brains just filter out anything that looks like it belongs.

My brain does that all the time, it's like a magic trick where I'm the confused audience. I'll swear something is gone forever, then it's just sitting there mocking me. The color trick @emery_taylor mentioned is a good move, I should try that with my own keys. My kitchen counter must be a portal that only opens when I start to panic.
