I found a weird fix for a repeating street sign in my town

For three months, the same dented green street sign for 'Elm Court' kept showing up at different corners in my neighborhood, always bent at the same spot. Last Tuesday, I got fed up and took a picture of it, then walked to the city works yard to report it as broken. The guy there looked at my phone, shrugged, and said they'd replace it. The next day, the sign was gone from everywhere, and a brand new one was only on the real Elm Court. Has anyone else had an object just stop repeating after you pointed it out?
