I was heating my punty rod all wrong for months

I kept getting cracks at the seal until a guy at the Tacoma studio pointed out my torch angle was too steep, making the heat uneven. I switched to holding it almost flat and the next five seals came out clean. How do you guys usually set up your bench torch for a solid punty?

My old Carlisle I keep the flame about a foot long and really bushy. I angle it so the punty rod rolls through the heat like a hot dog on a roller grill.

Check the seal's integrity before you break it off.

Months of cracks over a torch angle? Seems like a lot of fuss for something that gets broken off anyway. A foot-long bushy flame sounds like you're trying to roast a marshmallow, not attach a punty. As long as the glass is hot and the seal holds long enough to transfer the piece, isn't that good enough?
