Struggled between a custom photo book and a fancy watch for my dad's 60th, and the book won because it felt more personal.
I went with a 40-page Shutterfly album of old family trips to Yosemite, and he got a bit choked up looking through it, which a watch never would have done, so what's a gift that actually got an emotional reaction for you guys?

What about a gift that wasn't even a thing? My best reaction was paying for my mom's first pottery class. She'd always talked about trying it, and seeing her so excited to go was better than any object.

But what if he'd worn that watch every single day? I gave my dad a nice watch years ago, and it wasn't about the price. It was about him having something solid and useful from me that he'd see on his wrist all the time. A photo book sits on a shelf, but a good gift becomes part of someone's daily life. That constant, quiet reminder can mean just as much as a big emotional moment.

Exactly, that's the whole point. A gift you use every day builds a different kind of memory. It's not just for looking back, it's for right now. That watch on his wrist was a quiet little hello from you all the time. Stuff that sits on a shelf gathers dust, but stuff you use gathers meaning.
