My sister's 'smart' coffee mug gift was a bit too smart for its own good

I got her this mug that heats up and connects to an app for her birthday. It worked fine for a week, then started randomly beeping at 3 AM. I was house-sitting for her in Portland and the thing just kept going off. I had to unplug it and hide it in the garage. Anyone else have a gift that turned into a little tech nightmare?

That's the worst! My friend had a smart light bulb that would just turn on full brightness in the middle of the night. Sometimes these gadgets get a mind of their own.

Get a mind of their own" sounds like a setup problem to me.

Had the same thing with a smart plug a few years back. It started turning on a lamp at random hours, scared the heck out of me until I figured out it was the app syncing wrong with my schedule. Hard reset usually fixes it, hold down the button on the bottom for 10 seconds or check the manual for a factory reset trick. If that doesn't work, try deleting the app and reinstalling it to clear out any glitchy saved settings. Sometimes these things just need a fresh start to behave themselves again.
