My sister told me my gifts always felt like last-minute afterthoughts

She said I'd grab something random off a shelf instead of thinking about what she actually likes. Now I keep a running note on my phone with little things she mentions during the year, and my birthday gift for her last month was a vintage cookbook she'd mentioned back in June.

Honestly, the real issue here might not be about the gifts at all. People get so caught up in "the thought counts" crap they forget to check if the person even cares about getting gifts that match their taste. Your sister has a specific expectation of how you should show love, and that's fine, but it's also her problem to communicate clearly. You stepped up and fixed it, which is more than most people do. But think about this - maybe she's using gifts as a shortcut to test how much you pay attention to her, instead of just telling you she wants more quality time or something. Either way, you did the work, so don't let her guilt you into thinking your first attempts were lazy when you were probably just busy surviving your own life.

Nail on the head. She's testing you with gifts instead of just saying what she actually needs.

Honestly calling her out on it made mine finally admit she just wanted more time together.
